How do I find my container volume?

Fill the container with water and measure in millilitres (1 ml = 1 cm³). Or use the container volume calculator which calculates from dimensions. Most candle jars list their capacity.

Why does wax type affect the weight?

Different waxes have different densities. Beeswax is the densest (0.96 g/ml) so you need more weight per container, while coconut wax is lightest (0.82 g/ml). This affects both weight needed and cost.

Should I account for the second pour?

Soy wax often sinks as it cools, creating a dip around the wick. Allow 10% extra wax for a second (top-up) pour to fill this cavity.

How much does wax shrink when it cools?

Most waxes shrink 5-10% when cooling. Soy wax shrinks more than paraffin. The 10% extra in this calculator covers shrinkage and top-up pour needs.

How We Calculate This

The calculator uses the simple formula: wax weight (g) = container volume (ml) x wax density (g/ml)

Each wax type has a different density: soy 0.86, paraffin 0.90, coconut 0.82, beeswax 0.96, rapeseed 0.84, palm 0.88 g/ml.

The 10% extra covers shrinkage during cooling and the top-up pour that soy wax often requires.
