How much extra room should I leave?

Allow at least 3-5 cm extra on each dimension. This makes it easy to place and remove the item and leaves room for tissue paper. For oddly shaped items, allow more clearance.

Why does the height need to be so much taller?

Gift bags look best when tissue paper fans out above the item. Allow 5-10 cm above the item for tissue to peek out attractively from the top of the bag.

Can I use a bag that is slightly too small?

If the bag is only 1-2 cm too narrow, it may still work depending on the item shape. However, forcing items into tight bags can tear the bag and looks untidy.
