How tall should a bezel be?

The bezel height should be approximately 60-75% of the stone depth plus 0.5mm extra for pushing over. The bezel needs to hold the stone securely without covering too much of the crown.

What thickness bezel wire should I use?

For stones up to 8mm, use 0.3mm thick bezel wire (fine silver or sterling). For larger stones, 0.4-0.5mm provides more strength. Fine silver is easier to push over than sterling.

How many prongs do I need?

Round stones: 4-6 prongs. Oval and pear: 4-6 prongs. Square: 4 prongs (one per corner). More prongs give greater security but hide more of the stone.

Bezel strip length = stone circumference + 1 mm solder overlap
Prong length = (stone depth x 0.5) + 1 mm tip
Setting diameter = stone diameter + 1.5 mm for bezel walls
