Why do I need to pour in layers?

Pouring too deep causes excessive exothermic heat, which can crack the resin, cause yellowing, or create massive bubble problems. Layering controls the heat and produces clearer, stronger results.

How long should I wait between layers?

Wait until the previous layer is tacky/gel-like (dents under finger pressure) but not fully cured. For art epoxy this is typically 4-6 hours at 20°C. For deep pour, it is 12-24 hours.

Can I see the layers in the finished piece?

If you pour the next layer while the previous is still tacky, they bond chemically and the boundary is invisible. If you wait until the first layer is fully cured, sand the surface lightly before the next pour.

How deep can I pour in one layer?

Art epoxy: 1-3 cm max. Deep pour epoxy: 3-10 cm. Polyester resin: 2-5 cm. Always check your specific resin brand guidelines as these vary by manufacturer.

How the Calculation Works

The total depth is divided by the maximum safe layer depth for the resin type. The volume per layer is calculated from the mould cross-section area times the layer depth.

Max depth per layer: Art epoxy 2 cm | Deep pour 5 cm | Polyester 3 cm

Wait time between layers is the gel time for the resin type, adjusted for temperature (halves for every 10°C above 20°C).
