How does water hardness affect soap?

Hard water contains calcium and magnesium ions that react with soap to form scum (soap scum). This reduces lather, makes soap feel less slippery, and can cause dreaded orange spots. Chelating agents bind these minerals to improve performance.

What is a chelating agent?

A chelating agent binds metal ions in hard water, preventing them from interfering with soap. Citric acid (1-3% of oils) and EDTA (0.5-2% of oils) are common choices. Citric acid is natural but less effective than EDTA for very hard water.

How do I find my water hardness?

Check your water company website or use a home test kit. In the UK, water hardness is often listed in mg/l (ppm) of calcium carbonate. Soft is under 60 ppm, moderate 60-150 ppm, hard 150-300 ppm, very hard over 300 ppm.

Should I use distilled water instead?

Using distilled or deionised water eliminates hardness issues entirely. Many soapmakers use distilled water for consistent results. If using tap water, this calculator helps you compensate for hardness.
